We will be discussing London Falling, a nonfiction true-crime book by American journalist, Patrick Radden Keefe. It details the mysterious death in 2019 of 19-year-old Zac Brettler who jumped from a luxury London apartment into the River Thames. Afterward, his grieving parents discovered he lived a secret double life pretending to be a wealthy Russian oligarch's son.  Keefe’s account takes place in a  city  transformed from an industrial port into a financial capital, tracing the closure of the docks, the Big Bang deregulation of 1986 ,and London’s reinvention as a magnet for foreign money. Luxury developments such as the one where Zac Brettler met his end sit conspicuously empty, their units registered through offshore trusts.  His death exposes a web of deception, criminal violence, and institutional failure in the glittering British capital.
