My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson. It is a coming-of-age novel about a young, Black gay man who flees his wealthy Indianapolis family for New York City in the mid-1980s, finding himself at the center of the AIDS crisis, political upheaval, and activism while navigating past trauma, identity, and survival amidst societal neglect and vibrant queer life. The story follows his journey from a naive runaway to a politically awakened activist, blending humor, heartbreak, and history as he learns to fight for his community's survival.
