Community Event - Compassionate Communication: Supporting Individuals with Memory Loss

Karen Grimsich’s talk on compassionate communication with individuals experiencing memory loss emphasized empathy, patience and emotional connection. She encouraged attendees to “Play detective” - to look beyond words and behaviors to understand the root causes of agitation or confusion. While memories may fade, emotions remain powerful and real. By validating feelings, maintaining calm and responding with kindness, caregivers can create moments of trust and peace. The message was clear: even when facts are forgotten, the emotional bond can still shine through.

Have you wondered what the Niles Gurdwara Sikh temple is like inside? Join your Greater Niles Village friends on July 24 at 11:00 am for a temple tour, lunch and opportunity to learn more about our Sikh neighbors. Two temple members have volunteered to make our visit a meaningful one. Kashmir Shahi will be our tour guide and Preetam Kbhatia will accompany us and help us with lunch.

Here are all the important details:

We will meet promptly at 11:00 at the front steps of the temple, located at 300 Gurdwara Rd. Please don't be late!
The tour will be first, followed by lunch.
Preetam will help us choose food from the serving line and find tables outside in the shade.
Bring a scarf or other head covering and
Be prepared to remove your shoes while we are inside.
Our visit is for members, and not open to the public, but members are welcome to register a guest or two.

We look forward to seeing you there as we learn and make connections in our community.
