The Emperor of Gladness

About this event

Cover GladnessAt the next meeting of the Book Club we will be discussing The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong. The novel is about a lonely, young Vietnamese-American man named Hai who forms a life-altering bond with Grazina, an elderly, dementia-stricken Lithuanian widow, after she intervenes when he's on the verge of suicide. Set in the fictional post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, the story explores themes of chosen family, love, labor, loneliness, and the complexities of survival on society's fringes.
