About this event
We will be discussing Becoming Madame Secretary by Stephanie Dray. A work of historical fiction, the story covers the rise of Frances Perkins from a social reformer to the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. As Secretary of Labor she was the trusted lieutenant of Franklin Roosevelt, a central architect of the New Deal, and the driving force behind the development of the Social Security Act of 1935. Like so many female pioneers in American politics she often faced vicious opposition and struggled to balance the demands of a public career with marriage and motherhood.
The book is on the long side (544 pages/17 hours), so an early start is recommended.
