Greater Niles Villagers believe a better experience of aging is possible when we can grow with and rely on each other.
A recent New York Times article,“‘We Need Each Other’: Seniors are Drawn to New Housing Arrangements”, by Paula Swan, explored the exciting promise of intentional caring communities.
“As a graying population seek(s) ways to maintain independence without the isolation that can accompany so-called aging in place, various grassroots alternatives are gaining footholds. The newest and most vibrant innovation, the village movement, comprises 280 organizations in towns, cities, neighborhoods and even apartment complexes, and is growing by 20 percent a year, said Barbara Hughes Sullivan, national director of the Village to Village Network. In villages, “you’re still able to be active and part of the community,” said Ms. Sullivan. “And you have a sense of a caring group of people beyond your family. It’s very cool.”
Greater Niles Village launched its inaugural membership year in 2019, positively impacting seniors’ health and interdependence. Villagers form social networks through activities such as Special Interest Groups, and events such as “Tales of the Town”, “Sundaes in the Park with George” and “Are You in the Picture?”. Villagers will secure practical assistance to age safely and successfully in their own community through the Helping Hands Team, currently in pilot phase for delivery of direct services. |
