Greater Niles Villagers believe a better experience of aging is possible when we can grow with and rely on each other.

A recent New York Times article,“‘We Need Each Other’: Seniors are Drawn to New Housing Arrangements”, by Paula Swan, explored the exciting promise of intentional caring communities.

“As a graying population seek(s) ways to maintain independence without the isolation that can accompany so-called aging in place, various grassroots alternatives are gaining footholds. The newest and most vibrant innovation, the village movement, comprises 280 organizations in towns, cities, neighborhoods and even apartment complexes, and is growing by 20 percent a year, said Barbara Hughes Sullivan, national director of the Village to Village Network. In villages, “you’re still able to be active and part of the community,” said Ms. Sullivan. “And you have a sense of a caring group of people beyond your family. It’s very cool.”

Greater Niles Village launched its inaugural membership year in 2019, positively impacting seniors’ health and interdependence. Villagers form social networks through activities such as Special Interest Groups, and events such as “Tales of the Town”, “Sundaes in the Park with George” and “Are You in the Picture?”. Villagers will secure practical assistance to age safely and successfully in their own community through the Helping Hands Team, currently in pilot phase for delivery of direct services.

The cell phone is a 'smart device' that many of us carry around in our pockets, bags and purses all day, everyday.  We use our phones to make calls, text, keep track of our lives using the calendar, read the news, take pictures, check FaceBook and more. However, many of us would like to be a little 'smarter' about using cell phones and to learn more about how what our phones might be able to do for us.

Learn some tips/tricks about your cell phone and share some things you know about your phone. Our presenters will be members of a group of CyberGeezers, all members of a local retirees group, SIRS (Sons In Retirement.)

Charles Dickens began writing "his little Christmas book," as he called it in October 1843. As he wrote, Dickens is said to "have laughed and wept.” Known as both a novella and a (long) short story, "A Christmas Carol" was a huge success, selling more than 6000 copies immediately. The work began the transformation of celebrating Christmas as a family time with time off from work. Within 6 weeks, the novella adaptation hit the London stage. Ten years after publication, Dickens gave the first public reading of it "for profit."  He performed before a crowd of 2000. The performance lasted 3 hours. Dickens' last reading of "A Christmas Carol" was March 15, 1870. With tears streaming down his face he then blew the audience an affectionate kiss and left the stage. Dickens died 3 months later at the age of 58. “A Christmas Carol" has never gone out of print.  A ghost story with a moral, it appeals to people of all faiths.

Join the Greater Niles Book Club when Villager Marge Leonard will lead a discussion of "A Christmas Carol."  You are invited to bring with you your favorite seasonal read or your favorite ghost story to expand the discussion.
