OCTOBER 2019 NEWSLETTER

GREATER NILES VILLAGE

Greater Niles Village (GNV) is a vibrant community of neighbors who share our skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging. Greater Niles Villagers believe a better experience of aging is possible when we can grow with and rely on each other.

Not a place, but an idea.

Villages are dedicated to positively impacting health and interdependence by assisting members to form social networks and secure practical assistance to age safely and successfully in their own communities. Like the 350 Villages across the US, GNV’s members enjoy stronger community connections, less isolation, and increased independence. In Villages, older adults are empowered to remain in charge of their lives. Built by our members, for our members, GNV is a non-profit organization led by a Board of Directors.

Who is a Villager?  YOU!
  • you are an older adult in Fremont, seeking community, programs, and expertise to continue living a life of purpose and promise;
  • you are an adult child of a Fremont senior, looking for resources and partners to enhance daily life for your aging parent(s) and for assistance as a caregiver;
  • you are a potential volunteer, at any age, wishing to contribute your expertise towards a purposeful and powerful space for learning, laughter, and courage.

The Helping Hands team is designing GNV’s program of direct services for members who need assistance. September has been devoted to a pilot project: providing services to 6 members. October's meeting will focus on what we're learning and next steps. For more information, contact Kathy Steel-Sabo 510 936-0214.

INTEREST GROUPS

Meet neighbors who share your passions. GNV is convening social networks around activities and interests, connections that help us age successfully in our community.

GNV Walking Group

Friday, October 4, 11, 18, 25
9:30 - 11:00 am
Niles Library
150 I Street

The GNV Walking Interest Group is for all ages and abilities, meeting at 9:30 am on Fridays in October on the steps of the Niles Library.

Do you know that Niles' first post office fronted Niles Boulevard and the manager's salary was $12 annually? This was just one of the wonders the Greater Niles Village Walking Group learned on their September 20th walk. Also included were shared tales of the Niles Swimming Hole and the Ghost of Niles Canyon. Laurie Manuel lead 9 walkers and 3 children in strollers on a hike down the Alameda Creek trail and past the Staging Area.

GNV Book Club

Book A Christmas Carol
 Friday, November 15
1:00 - 2:30 pm
Niles Library
150 I Street

Marge Leonard will lead a discussion of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  If you value the coziness of family gatherings during the Christmas season, you have Dickens' classic short story to thank. GNV Book Club members are invited to bring other favorite seasonal stories or ghost stories to extend the discussion.

On September 20, Kathy Steel-Sabo lead 7 Greater Niles Village Book Club members in a discussion of Evicted by Matthew Desmond.  This work--a study of poverty and landlord profit published in 2016, and winner of multiple awards, including the Pulitzer Prize--framed a thoughtful discussion about the problem of homelessness and solutions.
Post-Retirement Reinvention

Thursday, October 17, 2019
10:00 - 11:30 am
Niles Discovery Church, Fellowship Hall
36600 Niles Blvd, Fremont

Are you exploring options as newly retired or retired for a while? Are you missing parts of your old job or even parts of yourself now that you’re retired? What would you like more of in your retired life? What would you like less of in your retired life? We are starting a peer group for people like us! We will talk about group structure at the first meeting and determine the best times to meet each week. What you contribute may well enrich the life of someone else. As a group we provide suggestions, support, and a testing place for new ideas. For more information, call or text John Zlatnik at 510-378-1162.
