Greater Niles Village is a community of neighbors who share their skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging.

CONNECTING WITH GREATER NILES VILLAGE

As we age, circumstances in our lives often change. We may not fully realize how they will affect our ability to stay connected and engaged and how much they can impact our overall health and well-being.

We need social connection to thrive — no matter our age — but recent research shows that the negative health consequences of chronic isolation and loneliness may be especially harmful for older adults.

In Greater Niles Village (GNV) we are dedicated to helping Villagers create, maintain, and strengthen ties to family and friends, expand social circles, and become more involved in the community. Read on to learn how Villagers are socially engaging with GNV.

Vas Victor and Barbara King

Villager Vas Victor is eagerly awaiting the birth of her first grandchild, to be born to her daughter. Baby will be snuggled in a quilt handmade by Grandma Vas with the instruction of Barbara King, chair of the Greater Niles Village Needlepoint Group. In soft colors of light green and lavender, with blue squares taken from the fabric of a shirt belonging to the baby’s grandfather, the quilt is lovingly hand-stitched. Once Barbara taught her the quilting technique, Vas finished the baby quilt on her own, stitching to occupy her time during a heavy rainfall. Now she is planning a second quilt, just in case her son decides to have a baby

Penne and Richard Feinberg, and Marge Leonard

HH: Taco SaladVillagers Penne and Richard Feinberg had a special question for Greater Niles Village Board member Marge Leonard:  “Do you know anyone who can prepare occasional organic ‘farm to plate’ meals for us?” Well, yes — we Villagers share information about resources in the community that enhance our lives. Marge, a charter member of LEAF (Local Ecology and Agriculture Fremont) introduced the Feinbergs to a fellow LEAF member (known as a wizard in the kitchen) who is providing the meals. Not only are the Feinbergs eating well, but this connection has generated a friendship.

Sundaes in the Park with George

California Nursery Historical Park

SITPWG: AdobeThe setting was historic and welcoming as Villagers gathered to hear George Roeding and brother, Bruce, talk about growing up in Niles on the nursery owned by their parents. Today the California Historical Nursery is known for its amazing contributions to horticulture. In those times, the brothers picked cucumbers for the pickling plant in Irvington, and plums from the family orchard. They swiped cherries from the neighbors' trees (Roeding plums, apricots and peaches not being satisfaction enough!). They entered their pet donkey "Four Bits" and dog “Jill” in regularly occurring Niles pet parades.

The brothers, still known as "the Roeding boys," entertained the 22 Villagers (and a few guests) in the first ever GNV paid-member "meet and greet,” in the shady area outside the Vallejo Adobe. Everyone enjoyed a walk-away ice cream sundae and each other's company while listening to some fascinating Niles history shared by the Roedings, who lived it.

GNV is a non-profit, member-supported organization led by a Board of Directors. We share our skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging. Villagers are making GNV a reality -- by volunteering their expertise and by becoming members. We will remain in charge our lives as we help each other to form social networks and secure practical assistance.  www.GreaterNilesVillage.org

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is the next selection. Villager Patty Allen will lead the discussion of this popular and well-loved novel, which was on the New York Times Bestseller list for 59 weeks following its publication in 2018. Accused of writing a subversive poem, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, an aristocrat, is placed under house arrest at the time of the Russian Revolution. Dark and depressive? You don't know the Count! There are numerous characters with Russian names, so you may want to keep a spreadsheet, but each one plays a role in the denouement. All are welcome (even if  you haven’t read the book).
