JULY 2019 NEWSLETTER

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

As an integral part of a person’s well-being, like exercising, eating well, and getting enough sleep, social connections are  vital. The restorative effects can be just as strong as those other, more traditional methods of promoting health.

GNV recognizes the crucial role of social connections to reduce isolation, increase independence and enhance purpose of life. Myriad volunteer activities, Special Interest Groups, events like Tales of the Town, Sundaes in the Park with George, and A Home for Today and Tomorrow are organized for Villagers to create and deepen social networks.

Greater Niles Village (GNV) is a non-profit, member-driven organization led by a Board of Directors. Villagers are coming together to provide social experiences and support services and to create new possibilities for what’s next as we age.

SUNDAES IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

 Saturday, July 27, 2019
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
The Vallejo Adobe
California Nursery Historical Park
36550 Niles Boulevard

Enjoy walk-away sundaes and hear George Roeding speak about his fascinating history with the California Nursery Company and the contributions of his amazing family to horticulture. Their vast holdings throughout the state included citrus, fig, and olive orchards in southern California as well as several growing fields in the Central Valley.  The Company provided trees and exhibits worldwide, helping to propel the nursery to become the largest in the West Coast. The story of the California Nursery spans over a century, involves great personalities such as Jose de Jesus Vallejo, John Rock, George Roeding, and Luther Burbank, and includes historical events such as the 1893 Columbia Exposition, development of Golden Gate Park, the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and the Golden Gate International Expositions of 1939 and 1940.

A truly significant occasion—GNV’s very first event for paid members

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

Greater Niles Village Book Club

SIG:BC A Gentleman in MoscowFriday, August 2, 2019
1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Niles Library
150 I Street

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is the next selection. Villager Patty Allen will lead the discussion of this popular and well-loved novel, which was on the New York Times Bestseller list for 59 weeks following its publication in 2018. Accused of writing a subversive poem, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, an aristocrat, is placed under house arrest at the time of the Russian Revolution. Dark and depressive? You don't know the Count! There are numerous characters with Russian names, so you may want to keep a spreadsheet, but each one plays a role in the denouement. All are welcome (even if you haven’t read the book).
