MEET BARBARA KING
Villager Barbara King has creatively integrated both her professional skills and personal interests into Greater Niles Village (GNV). Here, she shares her story of “putting my two interests together”.
“Through my membership in Greater Niles Village, I have found opportunities for rewarding service and enriching friendships, all right in my own neighborhood!
Why GNV?
I recently relocated to Niles from Florida. I spent my life managing the finance departments of several medical facilities in the eastern US. I joined GNV last year and have assumed some leadership roles on the Board using my non-profit/finance skills. I recognized how important the GNV endeavor was—helping neighbors of all ages stay engaged with their community through social and educational activities as well as providing services that allow them to thrive in their homes. As a caregiver for my parents the last five years of their lives, I know a “Village” could have been a great benefit to them and help to me.
Why knitting?
I guess I’m a right brain vs left brain kind of person. Working with numbers, regulations and problems all day left me mentally drained. While on a summer vacation many, many years ago, a friend taught me to knit. I quickly discovered that creating something out of fibers with my hands was relaxing and filled a creative void. It brought a new balance to my life. I’ve been hooked ever since (no pun intended). GNV offers members social activities to get to know our neighbors and share our interests. I volunteered to start one of the interest groups for people who like to knit, crochet, sew, quilt, etc. Hence, the Needlework Group. We have varying interests and skills and are working on a variety of projects. We have been knitting, crocheting and sewing twiddlemuffs, 25 of which have been donated to the East Bay Alzheimer’s Society, with more destined for Fremont memory care facilities as well as anyone in the community who needs one.” |
