GREATER NILES VILLAGE OPENS MEMBERSHIP

Greater Niles Village (GNV) is a vibrant community of neighbors along Mission Boulevard. We share our skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging. Greater Niles Villagers believe a better experience of aging is possible when we can grow with and rely on each other.

NOT A PLACE, BUT AN IDEA

Villages are dedicated to positively impacting health and interdependence by assisting members to form social networks and secure practical assistance to age safely and successfully in their own communities. Like the 350 Villages across the US, GNV’s members enjoy stronger community connections, less isolation, increased independence and enhanced purpose of life. In Villages, older adults are empowered to remain in charge of their lives.

BUILT BY OUR MEMBERS, FOR OUR MEMBERS

GNV is a non-profit, member-supported organization led by a Board of Directors. Villagers who share our excitement have begun to make GNV a reality — see our events in this e-newsletter and go to www.GreaterNilesVillage.org.

WHERE WILL WE GO FROM HERE?

Greater Niles Villagers will determine what we do and design how we do it. There are many opportunities:
  • organize and enjoy social activities based on our interests;
  • provide and participate in educational programs;
  • develop and utilize GNV’s screened list of businesses and service providers;
  • design and provide a selection of individualized services; and
  • coordinate community volunteers.
Membership fees and participation will make this happen.

JOIN US!

Through membership, each Village uniquely connects its older adults to the community, programs, and expertise they specifically need to continue living lives of purpose and promise. Join us to make GNV a true reflection of its members, a purposeful and powerful space for learning, laughter, and courage as we take on the future. Become a paid member in GNV’s inaugural year and demonstrate your commitment to having a Village in Greater Niles.

INTEREST GROUPS

Meet neighbors who share your passions. GNV is convening social networks around activities and interests, connections that help us age successfully in our community. At group meetings, learn what a Village is, and discover how it can benefit you.

Book Discussion

Friday, April 5
1:00 - 2:30 PM
Niles Library
150 I Street

Is there such a thing as a music whisperer?  Is vinyl dead?  What pieces of music have been meaningful in your life?

Patrice Varga will lead a discussion of The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce.  You can meet neighbors, share the ways music has impacted your life, and win the raffle for a Needle on the Groove gift certificate.

You will also learn more about Greater Niles Village and decide about the next book discussion meeting. This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Needlework Group

 Monday, April 15
10:00 -11:30 AM
Niles Discovery Church
36600 Niles Blvd

We will have a demonstration of hand-piecing a quilt block using freezer paper, which is an easy way to ensure your pattern pieces are consistent.  Future meetings will have demonstrations of lap quilting and hand quilt assembly.

Some of us have started creating “Twiddlemuffs” for Alzheimer and dementia patients. These are knitted or sewn hand-warmers that provide sensory stimulation for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia. They keep restless hands busy and soothe and comfort those who are anxious or agitated. We have contacted local facilities caring for these patients to see if there is a need. We are preparing samples to share with the group.

Many of our group are continuing to work on unfinished projects while sharing our interests, encouragement, knowledge and friendship. Join us as your time permits.

Helping Hands Team Meeting

Monday, April 8
1:00 - 2:30 PM
Fellowship Hall
Niles Discovery Church
 36600 Niles Blvd

Please join us as we discuss services designed to meet the needs of Greater Niles Villagers.  Soon, Villagers and Community Volunteers will lend their “Helping Hands” to provide assistance. In preparation, we need your help to determine what, when, where and how services will be delivered.  At the meeting on April 8th, we will take a close look at the information GNV needs to determine Villagers’ interests and needs, along with areas where they might provide assistance.  There will also be an opportunity to indicate your interest in participating in friendly visits or phone calls, household maintenance, or information and referral services.
