Greater Niles Village is a community of neighbors who share their skills and support to navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging.

GREATER NILES VILLAGE

Greater Niles Village (GNV), Fremont’s first Village, is forming. A group of Niles area citizens is  developing the GNV community. GNV will engage neighbors along Mission Boulevard from the Union City border to Morrison Canyon/Walnut Avenue.

Greater Niles Village is part of the Village to Village Network Village (vtvnetwork.org), a nation-wide association begun in Boston in 2010. There are nearly 400 Villages across the US. Villages are non-profit, member-driven organizations dedicated to positively impacting health and interdependence by assisting members with social networks and practical assistance to age safely and successfully in their own communities. Village members enjoy stronger community connections, increased independence and enhanced purpose of life. Through villages, older adults are empowered and remain in charge of their lives as they age.

The GNV Board is looking for neighbors who share our excitement about GNV and who want to get involved with making GNV a reality: a membership organization that connects older adults to their community, programs and expertise they need to live lives of purpose and promise.  GNV has several teams that are designing GNV’s activities and services.  Bring your expertise to GNV’s startup, and help us shape a dynamic and caring Village.

INTEREST GROUPS

Meet neighbors who share your passions. GNV is convening social networks  focused on shared  activities and interests, connections that help us age successfully in our community. At group meetings, learn what a Village is, and discover how it can benefit you.

Needlework Group

Monday, February 11, 2019
11:00 am
Color Me Quilts Classroom

Oh no, UFOs in Niles! Ok, these are not the otherworldly kinds; they are things stashed in your crafts baskets that are
UN-FINISHED-OBJECTS.
The Greater Niles Village Needlework group will be meeting for the first time on Monday, February 11th. The owners of Color Me Quilts are opening the shop for our group that morning. Join us as we share interests, talents, and UFOs. Below are just a few of GNV Board member Barbara King’s own: a sweater, two scarves, a small quilt, and a cross-stitch kit.

If you want to join but can’t make the meeting, or you have any questions, feel free to call me, Kathy Steel-Sabo, Board Chairperson, at (510) 790-3135, or

Book Discussion

Warm weather outside matched the warm spirits inside as Martha Leroy inspired long-time Niles residents to share tales of life in Niles as they remembered it. Twenty-nine people gathered in the historic Niles Depot on January 25,  to enjoy each other's memories. Stories flowed about old businesses, summer swimming holes, Niles School days, and first cars (often DiGiulio Pontiacs).  Niles History, one of several  Greater Niles Village Interest Groups, was an opportunity for Board member Barbara King to present the vision Greater Niles Village and how to get involved.

Corpus Christi, January 26 and 27

You may have spotted Board Member Marge Leonard greeting neighbors after Church on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Marge hosted an Information Table about  Greater Niles Village, upcoming activities, and opportunities to get involved.
