Interest Groups

Meet neighbors who share your passions. GNV is convening social networks around activities and interests, connections that help us age successfully in our community. At group meetings, learn what a Village is, and discover how it can benefit you.

Events listed below are free and open to all.

Tales of the Town

January 25: 1:00 - 2:300 pm

Niles Depot Museum, Niles Town Plaza
Get the real scoop on early Niles from long-time residents Don Dewey, Martha LeRoy, Christine Rebello and Carol Zilli. You’ll hear stories about growing up in Niles from these folks who were part of 'Niles when Niles Wasn't Cool.' For some background read Niles, Fremont by Philip Holmes and Jill M. Singleton (published 2004, Images of America' series.) Several of the speakers’ stories are included in the book.  Books are available at American Trading Post (37581 Niles Blvd.) or through Amazon.

Needlework Group

February 11:  11:00 am
Color Me Quilts classroom, 37495 Niles Blvd
Have you wandered through the needlework isles of a craft store and thought about making something for yourself or a gift for someone? A very unique scarf, perhaps? A keepsake blanket for that new grandchild? Do beautiful balls of yarn make you want to learn to knit or crochet? If only you knew how...

We have volunteers who will gladly share these skills and many others. Join Barbara King for our first meeting of the GNV Needlework Group as we explore your interests and develop our future programs. The group is open to anyone, regardless of skill level or experience.  Feel free to bring a project you are working on or one you would like to start.

Book Discussion

March 8:  1:00 - 2:00 pm

Niles Library, 150 I Street

Marge Leonard will lead the discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird (by Harper Lee). Voted “America’s #1 best loved novel” in the most recent PBS Great American Read, To Kill A Mockingbird has been read for generations. Read it again for the first time; then join the Greater Niles Village discussion group and select leaders to keep the group going.

Other Interest Groups forming in 2019

GNV About Town

October 26, 2018

Eight Niles neighbors held a “meet and greet” at the Jane R Clough (Niles) Library, learning information about GNV and participating in Marge Leonard’s review of best seller and historic thriller “The President Is Missing”. Conversation generated interest in future book reviews as well as new ideas and presenters for GNV Interest Groups.

Saturdays, September and October, 2018

GNV Board and Team members hosted an Information Table at Niles Farmer’s Market. It was a pleasure to chat with fellow residents, educating about the Village Movement, updating on GNV activities and inviting volunteer participation.

Greater Niles Village is a community of neighbors who share
their skills and support to navigate the challenges and
opportunities of aging.
