Discussion leader Patty Allen invites participants are asked to read a banned/challenged book, bring it to the meeting, and explain to the group both why it was banned and why it has redemptive value.
If you're unsure about a text to select, Google "banned books" or visit the American Library Association or Alameda County Library websites. Here's a short list to start steering you in the right direction: Beloved (Morrison), The Color Purple (Walker), Gender Queer (Kokabe), To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee), Huck Finn (Twain), Fahrenheit 451(Bradbury), Brave New World (Huxley), Kite Runner (Hosseini), Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck), Lord of the Flies (Golding), Handmaid's Tale (Atwood), Animal Farm and 1984 (Orwell), Slaughterhouse 5 (Vonnegut).
Of course, there are hundreds if not thousands more from which to choose. We're looking forward to a very lively discussion! Discussion leader: Patty Allen.
